Rakaia Gorge Camp

It's a great spot, formed in 1997 essentially as a fishing and jet boater's camping ground to provide safe, comfortable camping facilities for members and the public. The camp has a beautiful view of the river. The grounds and facilities are immaculate, and it's a great spot to disconnect, enjoy the ever-changing river and magnificent night sky.

Our visitors usually get the best views looking directly over the bright blue water of the gorge.

What's at the camp in the summer season?

  • The full campground has ample room for casual campers with some of the best views along the river's edge reserved for our casual visitors. The grounds are beautifully kept by our camp managers and the camp has an abundance of trees providing good shelter.

  • Dogs are most welcome but sorry no cats allowed. There is an easy walk down to the river from the camp and several other places to walk the dog.

  • Although the camp has no power, we do have hot showers in our ablution block that overlooks the river. The building has disability facilities, a kitchen shelter where you bring your own gas cookers (sorry no public BBQ's on site). There are tables just outside with fantastic views to enjoy that meal on and sinks for those dishes afterwards. The laundry tubs next door have hot water for that little bit of hand washing should you need it.

  • Mobile coverage at the camp is weak and we have no dedicated children’s playground, but these are a bonus to get off that screen, mix with other kids or play board games.
